And so it begins. . .

On June 19th, Mike, my husband, and I made a trip to Austin where I turned in all my paperwork for retirement!  I must admit that it's a little scary to stop doing something that I've done for 37 years. Actually, the stopping part is easy.  The hard part is deciding what to do with all my time and worrying if I made the right decision. Teaching has always been something I've done. I'll probably work later on, but for now, I'll travel with Mike and we'll enjoy "camping."
Our first trip was to Lake Bastrop South Shore LCRA Park. This was the last week of June. We stayed in site number 36.  That's a waterfront sight and we took our kayaks along.  Mike's working during the day and the evenings are for us to relax, walk Gus, kayak, and just generally enjoy ourselves.  What we didn't know was how hot it was going to get!  Our site ordinarily would be a good one to stay in, but on such a hot day with the full sun shining on us most of the time, staying indoors was preferable.
Aunt Joyce and Uncle John came over on Tuesday for a visit.  We had a great time talking and talking and talking.  For dinner we grilled salmon (outside of course) and had wild rice, steamed vegetables and pecan pie for dessert. That's one thing that we seem to always manage to do when we camp -- eat well!  They headed on back home, trying to make it before dark.  I'm afraid that they didn't make it.  Once the sun starts going down, darkness falls quickly.  But they did arrive safely. It was a great day, but spent almost entirely indoors.
Thankfully, Karen and Mickey live in Bastrop and invited us to cool off in their new pool and air conditioning!  Even Gus enjoyed the pool.  He was able to coexist with their cat.  When the cat wasn't looking, Gus would sneak a bite or two of her food.
Mike did take the kayak out once.  Gus didn't stay in the kayak, but had a great time swimming and splashing around Mike. On our last night there, it rained.  It was a nice, cooling gentle rain.  Everything got packed away and loaded before it got so terribly hot.  Actually, the rain sort of broke the heat wave. We were even able to unload in some much cooler temps.  Well, everything's been cleaned and put back in our trailer ready to roll again.  Next stop -- Tyler State Park.
